Today, Fire was holding tryouts at the Bridgeview Sports Dome and welcomed roughly, 300 players. Though I was dead most of the time, this was one of the coolest things I’ve ever participated in.
While working, I was at the door taking tickets to let players onto the warm up area. I got to meet every single person who walked in to try out. It was insane to find out how many just flew in from England, France, Poland and China to play and prove themselves for one hour.
The nerves around the dome were so overwhelming and contagious. I would talk to some players on occasion to try and help calm their nerves but they made me nervous and I wasnt even trying out! It was unreal. I have to hand it to them though, some of these guys were so dedicated.
Most memorable was this guy who flew in from China, right off the airplane was dropped off in a cab from the airport, wheeling in his luggage and all. He was so shy and quiet, but a real sweetheart. We had some conversation before he went in, and he was just really excited to be there. He was one of the few to get called back to play at a later time, and after, asked me and a co-worker for directions on how to get to his hotel. So proud for this guy because he walked out with his head held high, luggage and all and on top of everything, straight walked to his hotel, which was about 25 blocks from our location. That’s true swag. I really hope for the best for him, he seems like he deserved it.
Today was fun. It made me realize how fortunate I am to have the job that I have. I’m so glad that today, I got to be a part of someone’s dream.
